Pelajari cara-cara mudah yang bisa Anda lakukan untuk kesehatan mata dan mata Anda akan merasakan dan terlihat lebih baik.

1. Periksa mata setiap 12 bulan
Masalah penglihatan yang tidak ditangani akan berkembang semakin parah, dan memakai lensa kontak atau kacamata yang tidak lagi cocok untuk Anda dapat menyebabkan masalah penglihatan dan sakit kepala.



2. Di musim panas, pakailah kacamata
Sinar UV dapat membuat kerusakan serius pada mata. Kacamata yang baik dapat mencegah hal ini. Ketika membeli kacamata, pastikan yang dapat memantulkan paling tidak 98% radiasi UV.

3. Makanlah nutrisi yang baik untuk Anda dan mata Anda
Studi baru-baru ini menunjukkan bahwa vitamin dan kelompok antioksidan dapat mencegah, atau paling tidak memperlambat degenerasi makular dan pertumbuhan katarak. Nutrisi yang baik bagi tubuh juga baik untuk mata.

4. Jika Anda membaca atau bekerja menggunakan komputer, pastikan cahayanya tepat
Bekerja dengan cahaya minim dapat menyebabkan kelelahan mata, tapi cahaya yang terlalu terang juga tidak baik. Arah cahaya terbaik jika bekerja menggunakan komputer adalah dari lampu meja bercahaya lembut dari arah samping. Kurangi tingkat terang (brightness) monitor. 5. Istirahatkan mata Anda
Hampir semua orang merasakan mata mereka jadi tidak nyaman setelah duduk seharian di depan layar komputer. Hal ini disebabkan mata berkedip 25% lebih sedikit dari biasanya, yang menyebabkan mata jadi kering. Satu hal yang bisa dilakukan adalah menutup mata Anda dan menghitung sampai 5 sebelum membukanya kembali. Hal lainnya adalah berpaling dari layar monitor dan fokus pada sebuah objek yang jauh, sesering mungkin.

6. Cari lensa kontak dengan kualitas baik
Tidak semua lensa kontak sama. Ada yang aman untuk mata Anda, dan ada juga yang beresiko merusak mata. 8. Pakailah lensa kontak sesuai jadwal yang disarankan

Jahe untuk Mengobati Rematik, Batuk dan Radang Tenggorokan

Jahe merupakan tanaman obat berupa tumbuhan rumpun berbatang semu. Jahe (Zingiber officinale) berasal dari Asia, yang tersebar dari India sampai Cina. Karena itu, kedua bangsa ini disebut-sebut sebagai yang pertama kali memanfaatkan jahe, terutama sebagai bahan minuman, bumbu masak dan obat.

Jahe telah dibudidayakan di negara-negara Australia, Sri Lanka, Cina, Mesir, Yunani, India, Indonesia, Jamaika, Jepang, Meksiko, Nigeria, dan Pakistan. Jahe dari Jamaika mempunyai kualitas tertinggi. India merupakan negara produsen terbesar, yaitu lebih dari 50 persen dari total produksi jahe dunia.


Pengertian jahe di Indonesia adalah batang yang tumbuh dalam tanah yang disebut rimpang. Berdasarkan ukuran, bentuk, dan warna rimpangnya, jahe dapat dibagi menjadi tiga kelompok, yaitu jahe putih besar disebut juga jahe badak, jahe putih kecil, dan jahe merah (jahe sunti). Penghangat Badan
Rimpang jahe dapat digunakan sebagai bumbu masak, pemberi aroma dan rasa pada makanan seperti roti, kue, biskuit, kembang gula, dan berbagai minuman. Jahe juga digunakan pada industri obat, minyak wangi, dan jamu tradisional. Bisa juga diolah menjadi asinan jahe, dibuat acar, lalap, bandrek, sekoteng, dan sirup. Dalam perdagangan, jahe dijual dalam bentuk segar, kering, bubuk, dan awetan. Terdapat juga hasil olahan seperti minyak astiri dan koresin, diperoleh dengan cara penyulingan, yang berguna sebagai bahan pencampur dalam minuman beralkohol, es krim, sosis, dan lain-lain.

Bila kita minum segelas wedang jahe, ronde, bandrek, atau esteemje alias susu-telur-madu-jahe, sudah pasti badan akan terasa hangat. Ini memang khasiat paling populer yang dimiliki jahe. Padahal, masih banyak khasiat jahe lainnya seperti untuk menyembuhkan batuk kering dan radang tenggorokan serta sebagai tonikum.

Selain itu, jahe juga bisa menambah nafsu makan karena merangsang selaput lendir perut besar dan usus. Bagi yang sering menderita mabuk darat atau laut, jahe bermanfaat mencegah mabuk. Bahkan ada pakar yang menyatakan, tanaman ini bermanfaat pada kasus iritasi ginjal. Sebagai obat luar, parutan jahe juga bisa dipakai sebagai kompres untuk mengobati rematik dan sakit kepala.

Acar dan Asinan
Rimpang tanaman ini sudah umum dibudidayakan di daerah tropis dan subtropis, termasuk Indonesia. Penggunaannya dalam dunia pengobatan pun sudah dilakukan sejak lama. Kini, negara-negara Barat juga melakukan penelitian terhadap tanaman ini untuk digunakan sebagai obat. Di Denmark, tanaman ini diteliti agar mendapatkan senyawa aktif yang bisa digunakan untuk mengatasi rematik, dan berhasil.

Namun, jahe sebenarnya lebih populer sebagai bahan makanan dan minuman. Di Jepang, rebung atau tunasnya dijadikan bahan sayur, acar, atau asinan. Hasil olahan itu sangat populer karena aroma dan cita rasanya yang khas. Terhadap tubuh, makanan dari rebung jahe membantu menyehatkan badan, memperlancar air seni, dan memperbaiki sistem pencernaan.

Di Indonesia, mungkin baru orang Manado yang memanfaatkan rebung jahe sebagai salah satu pendamping nasi untuk lalapan didampingi sambal pedas. Cara memakannya selalu diikuti dengan meminum saguer (semacam tuak). Terkadang rebung jahe terlebih dahulu dimasukkan ke dalam saguer, dan supaya awet ke dalamnya diberi sedikit garam. Lalapan ini, konon, akan membuat tenaga kita menjadi berlipat ganda.

Rimpang jahe juga bisa diolah jadi manisan. Caranya, jahe yang sudah dibersihkan dimasak dalam air gula selama 2-3 jam. Setelah itu dipindahkan ke suatu tempat dan dibiarkan selama beberapa hari. Jahe dimasak untuk kedua kalinya dalam larutan gula seperti ketika memasak pertama. Setelah ditiriskan dan didinginkan, manisan ini siap dinikmati.

Pada masa lampau, cara ini digunakan di Kanton, Cina, untuk keperluan ekspor. Di tempat lain tentu caranya berbeda, bahkan lebih rumit.

Hanya saja, dengan cara ini manisan jahe masih dirasakan terlalu pedas. Ada cara mengurangi kepedasannya seperti yang dilakukan di Jamaika, yaitu direndam dalam air mengalir selama 12 jam.

Cara lain, jahe yang telah dibersihkan, kemudian direngatkan (dikeprak), lalu direndam dalam air asin selama 24-48 jam. Setelah itu, direndam lagi dalam air beras selama satu malam. Berikutnya direndam lagi dalam air bersih selama 5-10 hari dan setiap 12 jam airnya diganti. Hasilnya, siap dijadikan bahan manisan.

Jalan Kaki Jinakkan 9 Penyakit

STUDI dalam beberapa tahun terakhir semakin mengukuhkan bahwa berjalan tergopoh-gopoh dan bukan jalan santai memang memberi banyak manfaat bagi kesehatan kita. Inilah sembilan manfaat yang dapat diperoleh dari aktivitas jalan kaki.


(1) Serangan Jantung. Pertama-tama tentu menekan risiko serangan jantung. Kita tahu otot jantung membutuhkan aliran darah lebih deras (dari pembuluh koroner yang memberinya makan) agar bugar dan berfungsi normal memompakan darah tanpa henti. Untuk itu, otot jantung membutuhkan aliran darah yang lebih deras dan lancar. Berjalan kaki tergopoh-gopoh memperderas aliran darah ke dalam koroner jantung. Dengan demikian kecukupan oksigen otot jantung terpenuhi dan otot jantung terjaga untuk bisa tetap cukup berdegup. Bukan hanya itu. Kelenturan pembuluh darah arteri tubuh yang terlatih menguncup dan mengembang akan terbantu oleh mengejangnya otot-otot tubuh yang berada di sekitar dinding pembuluh darah sewaktu melakukan kegiatan berjalan kaki tergopoh-gopoh itu. Hasil akhirnya, tekanan darah cenderung menjadi lebih rendah, perlengketan antarsel darah yang bisa berakibat gumpalan bekuan darah penyumbat pembuluh juga akan berkurang.

Lebih dari itu, kolesterol baik (HDL) yang bekerja sebagai spons penyerap kolesterol jahat (LDL) akan meningkat dengan berjalan kaki tergopoh-gopoh. Tidak banyak cara di luar obat yang dapat meningkatkan kadar HDL selain dengan bergerak badan. Berjalan kaki tergopoh-gopoh tercatat mampu menurunkan risiko serangan jantung menjadi tinggal separuhnya.

(2). Stroke. Kendati manfaat berjalan kaki tergopoh-gopoh terhadap stroke pengaruhnya belum senyata terhadap serangan jantung koroner, beberapa studi menunjukkan hasil yang menggembirakan. Tengok saja bukti alami nenek-moyang kita yang lebih banyak melakukan kegiatan berjalan kaki setiap hari, kasus stroke zaman dulu tidak sebanyak sekarang. Salah satu studi terhadap 70 ribu perawat (Harvard School of Public Health) yang dalam bekerja tercatat melakukan kegiatan berjalan kaki sebanyak 20 jam dalam seminggu, risiko mereka terserang stroke menurun duapertiga.

(3). Berat badan stabil. Ternyata dengan membiasakan berjalan kaki rutin, laju metabolisme tubuh ditingkatkan. Selain sejumlah kalori terbuang oleh aktivitas berjalan kaki, kelebihan kalori yang mungkin ada akan terbakar oleh meningkatnya metabolisme tubuh, sehingga kenaikan berat badan tidak terjadi.

(4). Menurunkan berat badan. Ya, selain berat badan dipertahankan stabil, mereka yang mulai kelebihan berat badan, bisa diturunkan dengan melakukan kegiatan berjalan kaki tergopoh-gopoh itu secara rutin. Kelebihan gajih di bawah kulit akan dibakar bila rajin melakukan kegiatan berjalan kaki cukup laju paling kurang satu jam.

(5). Mencegah kencing manis. Ya, dengan membiasakan berjalan kaki melaju sekitar 6 km per jam, waktu tempuh sekitar 50 menit, ternyata dapat menunda atau mencegah berkembangnya diabetes Tipe 2, khususnya pada mereka yang bertubuh gemuk (National Institute of Diabetes and Gigesive & Kidney Diseases).

Sebagaimana kita tahu bahwa kasus diabetes yang bisa diatasi tanpa perlu minum obat, bisa dilakukan dengan memilih gerak badan rutin berkala. Selama gula darah bisa terkontrol hanya dengan cara bergerak badan (brisk walking), obat tidak diperlukan. Itu berarti bahwa berjalan kaki tergopoh-gopoh sama manfaatnya dengan obat antidiabetes.

(6). Mencegah osteoporosis. Betul. Dengan gerak badan dan berjalan kaki cepat, bukan saja otot-otot badan yang diperkokoh, melainkan tulang-belulang juga. Untuk metabolisme kalsium, bergerak badan diperlukan juga, selain butuh paparan cahaya matahari pagi. Tak cukup ekstra kalsium dan vitamin D saja untuk mencegah atau memperlambat proses osteoporosis. Tubuh juga membutuhkan gerak badan dan memerlukan waktu paling kurang 15 menit terpapar matahari pagi agar terbebas dari ancaman osteoporosis.

Mereka yang melakukan gerak badan sejak muda, dan cukup mengonsumsi kalsium, sampai usia 70 tahun diperkirakan masih bisa terbebas dari ancaman pengeroposan tulang.

(7). Meredakan encok lutut. Lebih sepertiga orang usia lanjut di Amerika mengalami encok lutut (osteoarthiris). Dengan membiasakan diri berjalan kaki cepat atau memilih berjalan di dalam kolam renang, keluhan nyeri encok lutut bisa mereda. Untuk mereka yang mengidap encok lutut, kegiatan berjalan kaki perlu dilakukan berselang-seling, tidak setiap hari. Tujuannya untuk memberi kesempatan kepada sendi untuk memulihkan diri.

Satu hal yang perlu diingat bagi pengidap encok tungkai atau kaki: jangan keliru memilih sepatu olahraga. Kita tahu, dengan semakin bertambahnya usia, ruang sendi semakin sempit, lapisan rawan sendi kian menipis, dan cairan ruang sendi sudah susut. Kondisi sendi yang sudah seperti itu perlu dijaga dan dilindungi agar tidak mengalami goncangan yang berat oleh beban bobot tubuh, terlebih pada yang gemuk.

Bila bantalan (sol) sepatu olahraganya kurang empuk, sepatu gagal berperan sebagai peredam goncangan (shock absorber). Itu berarti sendi tetap mengalami beban goncangan berat selama berjalan, apalagi bila berlari atau melompat. Hal ini yang memperburuk kondisi sendi, lalu mencetuskan serangan nyeri sendi atau menimbulkan penyakit sendi pada mereka yang berisiko terkena gangguan sendi.

Munculnya nyeri sendi sehabis melakukan kegiatan berjalan kaki, bisa jadi lantaran keliru memilih jenis sepatu olahraga. Sepatu bermerek menentukan kualitas bantalannya, selain kesesuaian anatomi kaki. Kebiasaan berjalan kaki tanpa alas kaki, bahkan di dalam rumah sekalipun, bisa memperburuk kondisi sendi-sendi tungkai dan kaki, akibat beban dan goncangan yang harus dipikul oleh sendi.

(8) Depresi. Ternyata bergerak badan dengan berjalan kaki cepat juga membantu pasien dengan status depresi. Berjalan kaki tergopoh-gopoh bisa menggantikan obat antidepresan yang harus diminum rutin. Studi ihwal terbebas dari depresi dengan berjalan kaki sudah dikerjakan lebih 10 tahun.

(9). Kanker juga dapat dibatalkan muncul bila kita rajin berjalan kaki, setidaknya jenis kanker usus besar (colorectal carcinoma). Kita tahu, bergerak badan ikut melancarkan peristaltik usus, sehingga buang air besar lebih tertib. Kanker usus dicetuskan pula oleh tertahannya tinja lebih lama di saluran pencernaan. Studi lain juga menyebutkan peran berjalan kaki terhadap kemungkinan penurunan risiko terkena kanker payudara.

Bijak Memilih Obat Batuk

Batuk bukan perkara remeh, kalau sudan menyerang, batuk bisa membuat Anda tak bisa tidur. Obat batuk OTC (over the counter) atau yang dijual bebas tanpa resep dokter bisa diminum bila kondisinya tidak parah.

Kalau batuk Anda bukan batuk biasa, segeralah hubungi dokter. Kemungkinan besar batuk Anda harus ditangani dengan obat jenis tertentu.

Memilih obat batuk itu gampang-gampang susah. Seorang teman sempat salah memilih obat batuk karena tidak memahami kandungan obat batuk yang dijual bebas. Batuknya tergolong kering, tetapi malah minum obat untuk batuk berdahak. Nggak klop!

Lalu, apa saja bekal yang diperlukan supaya kita tidak salah memilih obat batuk?


• Tanyakan kepada dokter atau apoteker

Dokter (dokter umum maupun spesialis paru) atau apoteker (ahli farmasi) bisa menjadi gudang informasi atas aneka produk yang diperlukan. Mereka bisa dimintai pendapat tentang obat yang cocok dengan kondisi batuk yang sedang Anda alami.

Menurut Dr. Ni Wayan Sudiarni, Sp.P, obat batuk yang dijual bebas sebenarnya cukup aman karena sudah melewati pemeriksaan dari badan POM. \"Masyarakat boleh memilih obat batuk tersebut. Sejauh penyebab batuk bukan infeksi kuman, biasanya batuk dapat teratasi,\" kata spesialis paru dari RS Tarakan Jakarta ini.

Bila dalam dua hari penggunaan obat batuk bebas tak kunjung meredakan batuk, baru diperlukan evaluasi dokter. Segera hubungi dokter atau petugas kesehatan guna mengetahui penyebab pasti dari batuk yang diderita.

• Bedakan jenis batuknya

Mencari obat batuk bebas bisa dicermati dari batuk yang Anda alami. Rasakan saja apakah batuk itu tergolong kering atau berdahak. Dari suara yang ditimbulkan saat Anda batuk, biasanya sudah terdengar \"jenis\" batuknya.

Pada batuk kering (tidak ada lendir), obat yang digunakan umumnya bertujuan menekan refleks batuk dengan memengaruhi saraf pusat di otak. Obat untuk batuk kering ini dapat memberi efek sedatif alias menenangkan.

Ada jenis obat batuk yang dapat mengubah konsistensi atau produksi lendir. Obat batuk mukolitik akan \"memecah\" (mengencerkan) lendir, membuatnya jadi tidak lengket, dan mudah dikeluarkan.

Obat batuk ekspektoran berguna dalam membantu mengangkat lendir ke atas, sehingga Anda lebih mudah batuk dan lendir dapat dikeluarkan. Beberapa. ahli berpendapat bahwa minum air putih menjadi cara paling efektif untuk mengeluarkan lendir.

• Untuk batuk dan pilek

Bila batuk yang diderita dibarengi pilek, Anda bisa mencari obat kombinasi untuk dua jenis simtom tersebut. Banyak sirop batuk dan pilek OTC mengandung bahan yang menekan batuk seperti dekstrometorfan plus ekspektoran, bahkan juga mengandung pereda nyeri.

Kombinasi dari obat batuk dan pilek juga dapat mengandung antihistamin, dekongestan, dan pereda nyeri. Kombinasi obat-obat ini dapat memberikan efek pereda yang optimal, terutama jika Anda memiliki simtom pilek seperti nyeri badan, batuk, dan hidung tersumbat.

• Cermati obat untuk anak

Prof. DR. Cissy R.S. Prawira Kartasasmita, Sp.A(K), menyarankan orangtua agar membaca label, terutama kandungannya terlebih dulu bila akan memberikan obat batuk OTC kepada anak. Tidak dianjurkan memberikan jenis antitusif kepada anak.

Jika mengandung antitusif, pilihlah yang generasi kedua karena lebih aman. Biasanya obat batuk OTC mengandung generasi pertama yang bisa membahayakan karena bekerjanya mengentalkan lendir.

Badan Kesehatan Dunia, WHO, menganjurkan para orangtua agar memberi anaknya banyak minum air saat batuk. Juga dapat diberikan obat-obat tradisional seperti jeruk nipis dengan kecap atau bahan lain.

\"Intinya, bila virus sebagai penyebab batuk, anak tidak perlu diberi obat khusus,\" ujar Prof. Cissy.

Obat batuk OTC boleh diberikan asal sesuai kebutuhan anak. \"Bila dalam dua hari tidak ada perbaikan, periksa ke petugas kesehatan. Mungkin saja anak memerlukan obat batuk jenis tertentu,\" katanya.

Jangan sembarangan membeli dan memberikan obat batuk kepada anak. Memberikan obat batuk untuk orang dewasa kepada anak, meski dengan mengurangi takaran, adalah cara yang sangat tidak bijaksana. Menggunakan sisa obat dari dokter yang sebenarnya untuk kerabat (kakak atau adiknya) juga sebaiknya tidak dilakukan.

• Oleskan balsam

Mengoleskan balsam atau krim yang mengandung camphor dan mentol di daerah leher dan dada, dapat membantu meredakan batuk. Efek aromatik dari bahan-bahan tersebut membantu melegakan saluran pernapasan.

Bahan tersebut juga tersedia untuk inhalasi panas. Mentol tersedia dalam permen dan tablet isap.

• Masih sangsi

Begitu banyak obat batuk yang beredar di pasaran, masih menyisakan kesangsian pada para ahli. Apakah obat batuk benar-benar bekerja dengan baik?

John E. Heffener, MD, pulmonologis dan mantan ketua American Thoracic Society, seperti dikutip WebMD mengatakan, \"Kita ingin mempercayai obat ini akan bekerja karena kita sangat tidak nyaman ketika sakit. Namun, uji klinis tidak menunjukkan bahwa obat batuk lebih baik ketimbang plasebo.\"

Mengapa obat-obat ini demikian populer? Karena, seperti dinyatakan Norman Edelman, MD, chief medical officer American Lung Association, orang menyukai penggunaan obat batuk. \"Rasanya enak pergi ke apotek lalu mencari obat batuk di lorongnya, mengambilnya, dan mengatakan, \'Obat ini akan membantu\',\" ucap Edelman.

Padahal, ditegaskan Heffner, kebanyakan batuk disebabkan oleh infeksi virus yang akan membaik dengan sendirinya dalam beberapa hari. Terlepas dari hasil penelitian tersebut, alangkah bijaksana bila Anda tetap berkonsultasi ke petugas kesehatan atau dokter saat ingin membeli obat batuk OTC.

Kalaupun batuk tak kunjung reda, segera tanamkan dalam benak Anda bahwa batuk yang diaiami sudah termasuk serius, sehingga perlu evaluasi dan penanganan dokter.

Tips Cermat Menangani Kerontokan Rambut

Setiap wanita tentunya mendambakan untuk memiliki rambut yang berkilau dan tertata dengan baik, namun hal itu tidaklah cukup apabila kondisi rambut tidak terjaga kesehatannya.

Seringkali kendala yang sering dihadapi wanita dengan rambutnya yaitu kerontokan rambut. Banyak hal yang menyebabkan rambut menjadi rontok, tapi tidak sedikit pula cara untuk mencegah dan memperbaiki kerusakan pada rambut.


Menyadari kerontokan rambut sedini mungkin akan jauh lebih baik, karena anda bisa mengantisipasinya supaya kerontokan tidak bertambah parah. Biasanya rambut yang menunjukkan tanda-tanda kerontokan, terlihat saat menyisir rambut dan keramas. Hal itu karena akar rambut sudah mulai rapuh sehingga rambut akan mudah rontok saat tertarik. Untuk mengatasi itu semua, mari kita simak beberapa point di bawah ini :

Hindari menyisir rambut dalam keadaan basah, maka dari itu setelah keramas keringkan dengan handuk supaya tidak lepek tetapi rambut jangan dibalut dengan handuk setelah itu, biarkan saja rambut mengering dengan sendirinya. Saat menyisir rambut, gunakanlah sisir yang bergerigi jarang untuk menghindari rontoknya rambut dari akar yang sudah merapuh. Namun yang perlu diperhatikan, jangan terlebih dahulu menggunakan hairdryer selama menjalani perawatan, karena akan merusak kelembaban rambut. Setelah rambut mengering sebaiknya jangan mengikat atau menjepitnya, karena akan mempengaruhi pertumbuhan rambut. Sebaiknya biarkan rambut tergerai.

Saat anda akan bepergian ke suatu tempat dan kondisi cuaca sedang terik, sebaiknya gunakanlah payung atau penutup kepala untuk menghindari sengatan sinar matahari langsung ke kepala. Karena sengatan tersebut akan membuat kulit kepala berkeringat dan akan berpengaruh terhadap kelembapan rambut.
